Miles Stones

 In 1938, Late Honorable Dr. Sushila Nayar, Ex. Union Health Minister, Founder President, Kasturba Health Society and Founder Director of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences was entrusted by Mahatma Gandhi the responsibility to control epidemics of cholera and malaria in and around Sevagram. It was felt that a dispensary was required to help the general patients of the villages and the same was started with a group of untrained workers in the surroundings of Gandhiji’s Ashram.
Dr. Sushila Nayar succeeded in preventing the spread of epidemics. When Gandhiji was in prison, Shri. G.D. Birla had arranged for a guest house at Sevagram for the guests of Gandhiji. In 1945 this guest house was handed over to Dr. Sushila Nayar and converted into a small Kasturba hospital, mainly for mothers and their children.
In 1973 Kasturba Nursing School was established by the Kasturba Health Society, Sevagram. General Nursing and Midwifery training course of three and half years duration was started. In the beginning, ten students were admitted every six months and from 1977, 20 students were admitted yearly. Presently the school admits 40 students every year.
The Kasturba Nursing College was started in the year 1997 in a spacious building constructed out of donation given by Urmiladevi Laxmiprasad Poddar. Foundation Stone of this building was laid by Late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, who was the Vice President of India in the year 1990 and he himself inaugurated the Nursing College building as the President of India in the year 1993.
The Kasturba Health Society received permission to start the Kasturba Nursing college on “No Grant” basis. Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing (2 years degree programme) was started in 1997, with intake capacity of 10 seats. It was affiliated to Nagpur University. Since 1998, this degree course has been affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, Maharashtra Nursing Council, Mumbai and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik have given permission to increase the intake capacity from 10 to 20 from the academic year 2007-2008.
Basic B.Sc. Nursing course (40 seats) has been added in 2008-2009.
Post Graduates program (M.Sc. Nursing) Started from the academic year 2011-12 with four clinical specialties – Medical Surgical Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Obstetrical & Gynecological Nursing, Community Health Nursing, with an intake of 20 seats.
The College is attached to 972 bedded Kasturba Hospital of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram. The students get rich experience in theory and in Practical/Clinical.
