Brief Information about Parent Hospital

In 1944, when Gandhi returned from his last imprisonment at Aga khan palace, Sevagram was experiencing a number of epidemics. In this situation,  Bapu had no use of the guesthouse built for his guests by Shri GD Birla. He got converted into a dispensary, and later into a 15 bedded Hospital for women and children. He put Dr. Sushila Nayar, (personal physician to Gandhi) in charge of the same. The hospital was named as “Kasturba Hospital” in memory of Kasturba Gandhi, who passed away in 1942. From a 15 bedded Hospital, the institute has gradually grown into a 934- bedded one. Today Kasturba Hospital has 690 teaching Beds, 100 service beds and 32 private rooms. The hospital provides 62 beds in different intensive care units (neonatal, pediatric, medical, coronary and burn) to care for critically ill patients. The institute also runs a 50- bedded Dr. Sushila Nayar Hospital, in the tribal areas of Utawali, in Melghat in Amravati District.
